Vermiculite has a number of properties that make it valuable to gardeners.
Lightweight
Super absorbent. With a soilless potting mix, its granules absorb both nutrients and water and retain them.
Its particles absorb and retain water and nutrients in a soilless potting mix.
Soil pH is neutral, so you don’t have to worry about correcting for pH changes caused by the soil amendment’s presence.
How to Make a Soilless Potting Mix using Vermiculite
Vermiculite is already included in soilless potting mixtures.
But, you may save money by purchasing vermiculite separately and mixing it yourself.
POTTING MIX RATIO :
4–6 PART COCOPEAT
1 PART perlite and 1 PART vermiculite - BENEFITS:
- seeds need regular moisture for germination. Drying prevents germination. Vermiculite retains more water than perlite, making it perfect for seed germination.
Some seeds should be covered, but only with a very light medium. This encourages sprouting plants push through. Vermiculite, finer than perlite, is suitable.
Due of its sterility, vermiculite is ideal for seed starting.
Plain vermiculite works very well root cuttings.
